FOR ALL those die-hard Sholay fans, there is some good news. A sequel to sholay titled Sholay 2000 is on it way and that too by the makers of the original Sholay film.
It has been 25 years since Sholay stole its way into the hearts of millions of Indians and turned out to be a cult film. And to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Sholay, G P Sippy, the producer of the film, announced on Tuesday that his grandsons would make a sequel.
Addressing reporters, Mr. Sippy also announced that a series of events would be organized in the net 501 days to commemorate Sholay. The 25th anniversary celebrations of Sholay would be launched with a national talent search for stars and technicians for the Sholay sequel.
“Sippy films have a history of creating icons both on small and large screen. From Rajesh khanna, Amjad khan, Raveena Tandon to Shah Rukh Khan, Sippy films is proud to have nurtured talents such as Salim Javed, Ramesh Sippy and Manmohan Singh.
“The talents search for Sholay sequel is in keeping with Sippy films core belief of encouraging young blood”, said Sascha Sippy, the Chief Executive Officer of the Sippy Films.
It was a indeed a drive down the memory lane on Tuesday afternoon as those associated with Sholay gathered at a South Mumbai hotel to speak about the film.
Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Jagdeep (Soorma Bhopali), Mcmohan etc were all present at the announcement to launch the sequel of Sholay. Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan could not make it to the function.
Though the cast of Sholay has not yet been decided, the sippy clan has decided to go in for a unique way of making the sequel. “We want to change the rules of the game in the film industry. We are not merely looking for new stars but a complete new way of doing business right from financing the project to its management and execution”, said Mr. Sascha Sippy.
Sascha Sippy and his colleagues would be seeking corporate help to finance the star search. New ways of distribution would also be worked on.
“We truly hope to make the film industry an industry where financiers will have to go by trust and relationship but can tie down film makers to norms of financial accountability and performance guarantees. Just as Sholay was a gigantic step ahead in every sphere, the sequel will be no less monumental both on and off the screen. We hope to spark off another revolution that will define films, film making and the film industry over the next 25 years”, said Mr. Sascha Sippy.
This is the second time in Bollywood that a sequel of a major hit film is being made. A sequel to Jewel thief bombed a couple of years back. Whether Sholay 2000 attains the heights of popularity that original Sholay achieved will entirely depend on the final product and its appeal to the masses.
